-Aaahhh…. Claaaaro…. Qué cosas tengo… – No puedo evitar reírme.
– ¡Anda! ¿En una piña? ¿Dónde?
– Debajo del mar.
– ¿Y se llama Bob Esponja, dices?
– Si.
– ¿Y tú sabes qué es una esponja?
– No, ¿qué?
– Bueno, vale.
-Maía, I’m gonna ride a shark. – We are in the bathroom, we just took a bath. We have this custom of having a shower together since always, like two little girls. I’m afraid the word «shyness» has no place, not even the thought of it, in the dictionary of such a language that we share.
– What? Did you say that you’re gonna ride a shark? – It has taken me aback.
– Yes, I’m gonna place on it a riding saddle and some reins, like a horse. Gee up! Gee up! – She looks at me with her eyes wide open, lively full of enthusiasm; and, as if waiting for my reaction, she stands still, motionless, for a moment, to shake suddenly her arms as if she were holding some reins in her hands.
– Uh-huh – I put a «thinking face» on – But isn’t it dangerous?
– Noooo…. – She laughs.- With the riding saddle and the reins, it’s all right. – While I dry her hair with the towel, she closes her eyes and smiles, imagining the situation.
– Hmmm.. And how are you gonna find a shark? – She pushes the towel aside and stares at me:
– At the beach, Maia, of course! – She takes the towel again over her head.
– Of cooooouuuurse… What a fool am I! – I cannot help myself from laughing. – So, if we go tomorrow to the beach, can we get a shark there? Do you have the saddle and the reins?
– Of course! Are you coming?
– Hmm… I’m a bit scared, you know… – Her expression changes, her smile fades away. She stands thinking for a moment, it seems to me almost a minute while I keep drying the rest of her body.
– Come on, Maia, it’s gonna be alright, I’ll say to him «plas!» and he’ll lay down so you can get on. – I burst into laughter.
– Oh, really? Like Moka, you give him an order and he obeys, isn’t it?
– Of course, Maia. Plas! Moka, plas! – Moka, who’s entered the bathroom in a very quiet and discreet manner, and who’s been licking my ankle since I got out of the shower, lays down. – Very well! Ha,ha! Look! Her tail moves! – My sister laughs. Then, she shuts up for a moment while she puts on the big SpongeBob t-shirt that she wears as pyjamas.- So, Maia, are we gonna ride a shark?
– Hhmm… To be honest, I prefer… I prefer… an unicorn!
– Nightmare Moon! – Her favourite character in My Little Pony series, assigned by her as my personal guardian and saviour, to whom she turns at any occasion in which I may need to be rescued; after Princess Celestia, her rightfully assigned companion. And, for the record, Nightmare Moon is only and exclusively for my help, enjoyment and safeguarding, no one else’s. Just because she says so, and that’s it.
– What a good idea! Because she flies, right? So we can go together by the sea – I’m already imagining the scene, in Valdelagrana beach, full of tourists with a scorched colour like that of the caramelized peanuts, a suffocating heat and a good man from Cadiz selling prawns in paper cones. And there we show up, my sister cutting smoothly into waves riding a shark, sitting on a brown riding saddle tied to its grey back and holding a pair of black leather reins longer than the line of the horizon. And me, flying by her side on the jet black winged unicorn, Nightmare Moon, who gets ahead of the waves’ moves with those huge blue eyes, so bright that it seems as if you were seeing double the North Star. That of seeing double makes my mind jumps into an image of a Cruzcampo. I feel like having a beer. I picture myself in a beach bar with my feet touching the sand… Nobody sells prawns in Valdelagrana beach, who cares if I dream a bit…
– Yes, me with the shark and you with Nightmare Moon. – Her voice brings me back to the bathroom. She has already put the huge SpongeBob t-shirt on. She laughs, and says: – I love SpongeBob.
– Oh, really?
– Yes, he lives inside a pineapple.
– Wow, in a pineapple? Where?
– At the bottom of the sea.
– And his name is SpongeBob, you said?
– Yes.
– Do you know what a sponge is?
– No, what?
– That thing you use to clean your body when having a shower, that soft thing there – I point out to a sponge which lays at the shower floor.
– Mom’s sponge?
– That’s it.
– Yuck, disgusting. – She sits down over the toilet’s cover to put her shoes on. She stares at me while I put my pyjamas on. – Listen, Maia, so… are we gonna ride a shark?
– Alright, ok. When are we doing it?
– Another day. – It is so obvious that it can be done any day… We are not going to take our pyjamas off to go ride a shark now, of course. She gets out of the bathroom while saying: – Maia, I’m gonna watch «Fall now!», are you coming?
– Yes, save a sit for me, just in case Moka wants to take it…
*Notes:
Maia is the way my sister pronounces my name.
Moka is my 5 months old Labrador retriever, she is as black as a good espresso, a real one. She is a cuddly earthquake, there is no better description.
Nightmare Moon is a winged black unicorn, adorable, from My Little Pony series. She goes around without rhyme or reason, but she is walking kindness. Princess Celestia is a white Pegasus, I think she is also a unicorn, Nightmare Moon’s big sister and princess of the kingdom of Equestria. She is the one who wears the trousers, so to say.
Valdelagrana beach (a jewel at the very south of Spain) is very well known among people from Jerez, Seville and Madrid during the months of July and August, reason why the rest of the people from the province of Cadiz avoid the place; the rest of the year it disappears miraculously from the map and only a few fortunate ones achieve to glimpse it by chance.
I think that SpongeBob needs no presentation.
«Fall Now!» is a Spanish TV show (or probably just a copy of another country’s TV show) in which people fall down through a hole when they don’t know the answer to a question, and a monster eats them; or so my sister says.
